PSE Flex Program Shows Why Timing Matters on the Grid
A recent MyNorthwest story highlights Puget Sound Energy’s new Flex Peak Time Savings program, which encourages customers to shift or reduce electricity use during peak demand hours.
The program gives participating customers the opportunity to earn bill credits by making small changes during specific windows of time, such as adjusting thermostats, delaying laundry or dishwashing, or using less electricity during the early evening hours when demand is often higher.
Programs like PSE Flex are an important reminder that reliability is not just about how much electricity Washington produces. It is also about when electricity is available, where it is needed, and how utilities manage demand during the busiest parts of the day.
Demand response programs, energy efficiency, transmission upgrades, clean generation, and battery energy storage are all part of a more flexible energy system. Each solution plays a different role. Customer programs like PSE Flex can help shift demand during certain hours. Battery storage can help by storing electricity when power is available and delivering it back to the grid when demand rises.
As Washington’s electricity needs grow, utilities will need more tools that can help manage demand, support reliability, and make better use of the clean energy already being generated. That is especially important in Western Washington, where many customers live and use electricity, but much of the state’s new wind and solar generation is located farther away.
